Speeding set to increase insurance

Drivers are being warned that they will get much cheaper car insurance if they watch their speed.

Under the government's proposed Road Safety Bill, driving just 15mph above the speed limit could increase annual premiums by as much as £476.39, according to insuresupermarket.

This is because driving 45mph in a 30mph zone will mean six points are added to your driving licence instead of three.

Six points will lead the car insurance company to raise your premiums significantly and if your licence is taken away an annual premium could hit £860.

Then, because a car insurance company requires you to disclose any points for five years following an offence, you could be paying as much as £3,075.85 in higher premiums - just as a result of points.

Richard Mason, insuresupermarket director, said: "When you're in a rush to get home from work at the end of the day, think before you put your foot down, getting caught speeding once is bad luck but twice and you could lose your license. For car insurance premiums, points really do mean pounds - and lots of them."

As well as avoiding the speed cameras, driving slowly and safely means you're less likely to have any accidents, keeping that all-important no claims discount in tact for cheaper car insurance.
