Caravan sales "holding up"

Britons may be increasingly opting to invest in caravans despite the economic downturn, potentially leading to rising numbers of caravan insurance customers.

While the number of people purchasing motorhomes has fallen, caravan sales continue to be strong, according to an industry expert.

Ian Ralph, director of website UKCampsite.co.uk, has said that sales of the mobile homes are holding up well as more Britons take to caravanning as a cheap way to holiday.

"The industry in general is seeing a large rise in people taking up the pastime, new to camping, or caravanning, and looking to try it for the first time this year," he commented.

However, falling sales of motorhomes may be boosted by the planned scrappage scheme, which will see Britons given a grant of £2,000 towards investing in a new model in return for scrapping their ten-year-old vehicle.

Mr Ralph disagrees, however, saying that motorhomes can last long after this time.

"We don't believe the scrappage scheme will have any effect on motorhome sales - a ten year old motorhome still has many years camping service left in it," he said.

His view echoes that of the National Caravan Council, which said earlier this month that the plans are unlikely to affect motorhome sales because of the vehicles'' ability to retain value.
