Britons told to take care in the kitchen

Britons have been reminded to be careful when around the home, as a new survey indicates the vast array of potential dangers in everyday situations.

A study by Churchill Home Insurance shows that nearly one in ten accidents in the home occur in the kitchen.

With the kitchen one of the areas of the house most in use and also upon which Britons spend large sums, the study suggests it is important adequate home insurance provision is secured.

The sums being spent on the humble kitchen are continuing to rise, with an estimated £76 billion spent each year in the UK.

With the rise of cafes and the regular fix of coffee now part of British life, the kitchen is becoming an increasingly important place for Britons.

As such households spend more than £3,000 on the room each, with expensive devices such as washing machines and microwaves meaning the kitchen area is both well-furnished and expensive.

New devices such as popcorn-makers, electric pepper mills and grilling machines have only added to the concentration of products in the kitchen.

Churchill's insurance chief Martin Scott commented: "The research shows that the kitchen is full of expensive electrical equipment and accessories so it is imperative that house-holders make sure they are covered against any accidental damage.

"Otherwise, it's easy to see how an everyday accident could make a real dent in the household finances."
