Towers urged to adjust tyre pressure

Britons looking to tow their caravan on a holiday this summer are being urged to consider their tyre pressure.

Rather than risking a caravan insurance claim by towing the vehicle on normally-inflated tyres, motorists should adjust their wheels in accordance with how heavy the load they plan to carry is.

ATS Euromaster is warning Brits that failing to change the tyre pressure in such circumstances can increase stopping distances significantly.

Additionally, the firm highlights that handling can also be adversely impacted and tyres can wear down.

"If you are carrying a full load of passengers with luggage or will be towing a caravan or trailer, tyre pressures must be increased in line with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations," commented Chris Hufflett, group operations director for ATS Euromaster.

He went on to say that the job only takes five minutes - a short time to enhance safety and potentially reduce the risk of having to make a caravan insurance claim.

Figures from the National Tyre Distributors Association cited by TyreSafe earlier this year showed that of nearly 60,000 cars checked in January 2009 by its retail members, 7,000 vehicles had at least one illegal tyre.
