Road safety a priority for holiday season

Caravan owners could be encouraged to boost their safety in the coming months as emergency services in Yorkshire gear up for a new driving campaign.

As the holiday season approaches, the cross-border initiative is to be launched by road safety teams, police and firefighters to reduce the number of accidents motorists have on their way to holiday destinations.

The Yorkshire Post reports that the first day of action will take place on Saturday, while the second will run on July 18th.

Other forces teaming up for the action days include Northumbria, Durham and Cumbria.

North Yorkshire Police's sergeant Andrew Stow said that officers would be patrolling the main holiday routes to help drivers reach their destinations with minimum disruption.

"I would encourage all road users to ensure that their vehicles are correctly prepared for the journey and to ensure that they take regular breaks to combat the effects of fatigue," he stated, warning: "Those drivers who choose to drive irresponsibly will be fairly but firmly dealt with."

Earlier this year, the Highways Agency teamed up with the Caravan Club to provide services to help keep motorhomers safe on the roads, including live traffic information.
