Firm issues run flat tyre warning
Written by Fran Newton, 29 May 2009
Motorists heading on a break with their mobile home this summer could end up having to make a caravan insurance claim if they use the wrong wheels.
Tyre firm Protyre is warning drivers that using run flat wheels on their caravan could reduce the car and mobile home combination's stability.
Self-supporting run flat tyres allow the vehicle to continue to run for a period of time once the wheels have deflated, but are only designed to bear the weight of a solo vehicle.
Because of this, risks may be posed by using the type of wheel when towing a trailer or caravan.
"To avoid this potential hazard, Protyre recommends that the distance travelled and maximum speed when driving a vehicle with a deflated run flat tyres should be reduced," the firm advises.
It also suggests that consumers avoid using the tyres with caravans altogether, as the vehicles have no pressure monitoring systems to warn that the wheels are deflating.
In March, the firm urged Britons to check their mobile home tyres after taking the caravan out of storage, to ensure that a winter of disuse had not caused any adverse results on their wheels.
