Mobile home industry booms

Written by John Mills, 29 May 2009

More Britons could be set to invest in caravan insurance policies for their summer breaks as firms have reported a rise in mobile home hire.

The Telegraph claims that business at motorhome hire firms has surged by up to 50 per cent recently, with caravan manufacturers also seeing sale and order increases of up to 15 per cent.

Bookings at Camping and Caravanning Club sites have risen by 38 per cent this half-term week and rose by up to 50 per cent over the Easter period.

Club spokesman Jon Dale told the publication that consumers are looking to cut costs during the negative financial climate.

"People don't have as much disposable income and so they are looking for cheaper alternatives to going abroad or staying in a hotel or bed and breakfast," he said.

Meanwhile, Russell Conneely, a director of Motorhomes UK, commented that the credit crunch was actually having a positive impact on the company and had resulted in a 50 per cent increase in business.

"It can cost about £3,000 to take a family of six to Spain for a holiday but they can rent a motorhome for less than a third of that including site fees and insurance," he stated.
