Britons are being urged by a motoring celebrity not to forget the crucial role played by caravans in history.

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond has published a book entitled A Short History of Caravans in the UK in which he extols the virtues of mobile homes as more than a place to spend a summer break.

In an excerpt from the publication, the TV and radio star reminds caravan insurance policyholders of when caravans were sent to the front line of battle with the Red Cross to care for injured soldiers, the Times reports.

"The next time you're stuck behind a line of caravans on a country lane - and you will be - before you hit the horn, and fill up the swear box, remember this: without the caravan you probably wouldn't be here," a section from the book reads.

Hammond, nicknamed the Hamster, went on to say that the mobile home is fast becoming a symbol of freedom of speech and independence.

The book was published last month and includes information on the origin of the mobile home, celebrity caravanners, practical advice on how to get the best performance from the models and games to play in them.
