More motoring education needed

Greater motoring education is needed to ensure our roads are safe to use, an online insurance provider has said.

New statistics from the Home Office have revealed young men massively outnumber young women when it comes to motoring offences.

During 2004 2,215 males aged between 17 and 20 were convicted of dangerous driving, compared to 36 per cent of women at a similar age.

Out of all drivers, 17-20 year old males are accountable for around 33 per cent of all convictions for dangerous driving, or causing bodily harm or death through driving, despite only making up three per cent of the driving population.

The firm, which analysed the figures, called for more "ring-fenced" funding for driving education schemes to help change people's attitudes to road use.

"We need concerted action to help change the attitudes of young male drivers with pre-emptive awareness campaigns before they reach driving age", said a spokesperson.

"Young men are prone to take more risks and education is the only way to change their attitudes. Enforcement is essential but it only catches the culprits rather than changing who they are."

Apart from the safety aspects, an advanced driving course can get you reductions and cheap car insurance.
