Britons might be heading to the Cotswolds with their caravans this summer, as the region is seeing an influx in visitors to mobile home sites.

The Cotswold Journal reports that this summer could be a bumper season, with local attractions seeing soaring visitor numbers as Britons choose to take breaks at home.

Birdland Park and Gardens, at Bourton-on-the-Water, is among the attractions seeing the positive effects of the credit crunch.

Simon Blackwell, Birdland's director, told the publication: "It's been quite a good year.

"It seems to be a trend that there are more people around the bed and breakfasts and caravan sites."

Since the beginning of the year reports have abounded about 2009 being the year of the caravan holiday.

Earlier this year, the Times reported that more Britons will take a caravan holiday in 2009 than will visit top overseas destination Spain.

Director-general of the National Caravan Council told the publication that bookings at mobile home sites had been up by between eight and 50 per cent , while evidence had shown that existing mobile home owners have been using their caravans more.

He added that mobile home holidays had changed beyond recognition over the last decade.
