Caravan insurance policyholders could be doing their bit for the environment by holidaying in their mobile homes rather than taking trips abroad.
According to the National Caravan Council (NCC), the current caravan holiday boom could save thousands of tonnes of CO2 produced by taking flights overseas.
The organisation states that bookings at caravan parks across the country are presently seeing an increase of around 25 per cent, while passenger numbers at airports have dwindled.
"Caravan enthusiasts have a high level of 'green' awareness compared to the public in general," commented director general of the NCC, John Lally.
"We really want to get the message out that not only does caravanning support rural economies, but it allows you to control costs, get back to nature and to choose a greener holiday option."
Mr Lally added that caravanners often choose activities such as walking and cycling at their destinations and have been shown to be more likely to use energy-efficient products.
According to the NCC, other green aspects of using a mobile home include the use of alternative power such as solar energy to heat communal shower blocks, while water and power use in a caravan is often less than would be used in a hotel.
Last month, the organisation reported a surge in bookings at caravan parks and an increase in sales of touring models.
