Caravan insurance policyholders who pitched their models in Weymouth recently were in for a treat when famous botanist David Bellamy led a wildlife walk around local holiday parks.

The Dorset Echo reports that holidaymakers and mobile home owners were among those who joined the professor in his walk as part of a green festival held by the Weymouth Bay and Seaview Holiday Parks at Preston.

Professor Bellamy commented that he enjoyed seeing the biodiversity on offer at the new wildlife garden installed at the Seaview site.

"Caravan parks are a great haven for wildlife and open a window on the countryside for millions of people to enjoy the bustling world of nature," he added.

During the walk, the botanist pointed out various different types of flora and fauna, before officially opening the garden.

To mark the occasion, local children had designed pictures for the garden, which were on display. The new outdoor space features plants such as marigolds, lavender and tall lupins.

Earlier this month, the professor visited St Albans, where he opened the first stage in a project called Butterfly World - Future Gardens. The scheme's creator, conservationist Clive Farrell, hopes to build a 200 metre dome to house butterflies that will open next year, the Independent reports.
