Mobile phone fines on the rise

Drivers were fined approximately £7 million for using their mobile phones at the wheel last year.

The £30 fines for driving with a mobile were introduced in December 2003 and next year the fine will be doubled to £60 plus three points on your driving licence, according to The Times.

Using pictures from speed cameras as well as automatic number plate recognition, police were able to apprehend around 75 per cent more illegal phone users last year compared with 2004, with over 140,000 tickets being issued in total.

The penalty system is also designed to make it difficult for drivers to contest the fines in court and it is van drivers who are hit the hardest.

The penalty imposed for contesting a citation can amount to around £1,000 for personal cars, but this can rise to £2,500 in the case of commercial vans.

The mobile phone ban was brought in because it was found that chatting on the phone while driving practically quadrupled the risk of an accident.

As well as avoiding a hefty fine, therefore, law abiding van drivers can rest assured that they are protecting their no claims discount for cheaper van insurance.

It is important your cheap van insurance also covers your vehicle if it needs to be towed and during storage and you can find cheaper van insurance by restricting the number of named drivers on the policy.
