Car manufacturer Volvo has developed a new system that is designed to reduce the risk of a caravan wobbling all over the road when being pulled by a car.
In a move that could reduce the risk of people having to claim on their caravan insurance for an accident on the roads, Volvo has launched the Trailer Stability Assist, which counteracts wobbling and helps to stabilise a caravan that has begun weaving across the road.
"Wobbling is a true nightmare for anyone who regularly tows a trailer of some sort. The problem often occurs, for instance, when a towing caravan that has been incorrectly loaded with too much weight at the very front or very rear," Per Ola Fuxin, head of vehicle dynamics at Volvo Cars, explained.
As a result, Volvo has come up with the technology to consistently monitor the threat of wobbling from a caravan, before allowing the car to compensate by braking one or more of the car's wheels as necessary.
It is hoped the technology could help reduce the number of accidents involving caravans on the roads, which would also bring down the cost of caravan insurance.
The UK is expected to see a significant increase in the number of caravanners heading onto its roads this summer as the recession, combined with the Met Office's prediction of hot weather, means more people are expected to take a caravan holiday in the country.
