Caravan insurance customers may want to take note of warnings issued by an environmental body about the pitfalls of pitching their vehicles on riverbanks.

The Environmental Agency has urged caravan and camping sites located near [to] rivers and coastlines to erect signs signaling the potential risk of flooding and offering campers information on emergency action.

"Some site owners are well aware of the risks, and inform their residents of them and have good evacuation procedures in place," agency chairman Lord Chris Smith.

He explained that not all sites do inform caravan insurance customers of the risks and advocated implementing a "better and more rigorous" set of rules to ensure that "anyone spending time at such a site knows precisely what they need to do if and when a warning comes".

Lord Smith also noted that as climate change takes effect the risk on flood-risk sites would increase putting caravans in serious danger from the sea and storms that overwhelm defences.

He criticised the Flood and Water Management Bill, which was written following the disastrous 2007 floods, for not going far enough to protect people camping and parking their caravans on these sites.
