A whole host of new caravan sites need to be built in the east of England by 2011 to meet demand, it has been recommended.
The Department for Communities and Local Government has advised that such sites will need to be built on green belt land, due to lack of space, and advocates establishing 62 new plots in this region, giving caravan insurance customers additional holidaying options, reports the Echo.
"The allocation of 62 pitches would result in a minimum of five sites having to be identified in the district [Basildon]," said the department.
Exact targets will be finalised by the end of this year and are a response to meet proposed caravan pitch numbers for both holidaying motorhome owners and the travelling community.
Basildon council already has 116 legal pitches and is being asked to create five more in its municipality - a target it is dubious of.
"The prospect of identifying such a high number of sites across a very small district is such that the deliverability of the target is severely in doubt," was the local authority's response.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail has thrown its weight behind the caravan holiday this week in an article entitled Credit Crunch Travel: Back to Basics.
Travel writer Gareth Huw Davies describes his experience of a caravan holiday to budgeting Brits looking for a bargain break.
He writes: "You need to know this about caravans - now they rival small stately homes in size."
