Modern caravans "rival small stately homes in size", budgeting holidaymakers have been advised.

Travel writer Gareth Huw Davies claims in a Daily Mail article that travellers' perceptions of caravans are now outdated, as are their visions of camping sites which have evolved in recent years.

He describes the south coast caravan park he visited as having morphed into the nature reserve that surrounds it, transforming this land from a seagull-infested landscape to one peppered with honey buzzards and photo opportunities.

Earlier in 2009, the Pagham site won a David Bellamy gold award for caravan parks - a scheme launched ten years ago in order to highlight to caravan insurance customers and other holidaymakers the merits of such areas.

Mr Davies explains that Mr Bellamy noticed the beauty which "blossomed in these quiet and protected environments" and called them "paradise parks".

The system today looks at caravan parks in a holistic sense - from their management, environmentally-friendliness and scenic value.

This year, 600 caravan parks picked up the award illustrating the number of sites now making the grade for this prestigious accolade.

Meanwhile, the government's Department for Communities and Local Government has indicated that 62 new sites will need to be established in the east of England by 2011 to keep up with current demand for caravan insurance customers and the travelling community, reports the Echo.

Basildon council, which already has 116 legal pitches and is being asked to create five more - potentially on green belt land - has called the targets unrealistic.
