The economic downturn may have its upsides for the caravan industry.

Despite many businesses falling victim to doom and gloom in the current economic climate, numerous caravan sites and firms are seeing a boost as a result of the credit crunch, reports have suggested.

According to nebusiness.co.uk, Barmoor Castle Country Park, which has 104 mobile homes onsite, is reporting an increase in enquiries, while the Caravan Company has seen sales of new models rise by 15 per cent this year.

The park's boss Ann Lamb told the website that she would have said she was nervous about 2009 had somebody asked her around Christmas.

"But caravan parks are actually benefiting - it's an affordable holiday home. It's easy to look after, it's secure if you are not here and there is a community feel. It's like village life," she said.

The firm plans to increase the number of caravans it has in the coming years.

Caravan insurance policyholders may be growing in number as Britons look to avoid foreign holidays because of the weak pound, choosing to stay at home and save money instead.

The price of flights abroad also look set to rise, with the government outlining plans in April to increase air passenger duty by up to 112 per cent in November.
