Caravan insurance customers hoping to secure a cheaper policy this year have been warned against fronting to secure a better deal.
Financial expert Lisa Bachelor, writing in the Guardian, notes that many people do not realise that lying about the principle driver of a car or caravan in order to secure a cheaper policy is fraud.
She says that public perception of fronting was made worse when Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May advocated the practice on their TV show.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is set to publish a report this week which is expected to reveal a 30 per cent rise in motorists engaging in fraudulent practices to lower their car and caravan insurance premiums.
Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, warned that brokers are clamping down on fronting.
He said: "Through closer scrutiny of proposal forms and claims, as well as the exchange of information through industry-wide databases, the net is tightening on the cheats."
Earlier this month, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) urged motorists to keep up with their caravan insurance and other motoring policies during the credit crunch.
Steve Foulsham, technical services manager at Biba, implored caravan owners and motorists to shop around for the best deal.
