Caravan insurance customers have been warned, by one expert, that before heading off on holiday they should check their tyre treads.
According to TyreSafe, with many caravans being left to stand idle for large parts of the year flat spots or damage as a result of exposure to UV rays can go unnoticed.
The industry council, which was set up to raise awareness of the dangers of worn tyres, added that caravan owners should check their wheels' pressure levels before setting off.
Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, said this year the problem could be even greater, as the body anticipates more people holidaying in caravans during the credit crunch.
"A significant number of these will be choosing a caravan holiday possibly for the first time and its essential that they make a few important tyre checks before setting off," he explained.
VisitBritain predicts a 20 per cent rise in holidays on home soil this year, while the National Caravan Council expects 14 million breaks will be taken in some form of mobile home during 2009.
Earlier this month holidaymakers were advised that caravan holidays are now a more stylish affair than in previous years.
Nikki Nichol, head of public relations at the Caravan Club, urged Brits to update their perceptions of caravanning holidays in an interview published on the organisation's website.
