Brits are holidaying on home soil this summer in a bid to budget their way through the credit crunch, research has found.

According to the BBC, 20 per cent of holidaymakers who travelled abroad last summer will stay in the UK in 2009, which is having a positive effect on trade at caravan parks.

Susan McBrides, who may need caravan insurance, has decided to take at break at West Ayton Caravan Park in Scarborough.

"It's a lot cheaper - you don't have your airport fees and insurance. You do save an awful lot of money," she told the BBC.

The Caravan Club says that bookings for this kind of holiday are up 40 per cent this summer, compared to last, which may spark a surge in demand for caravan insurance.

Meanwhile, West Ayton Caravan Park in Scarborough saw an 80 per cent spike in business in June 2009, compared with the same month in 2008.

"I can see it carrying on that way throughout the season," said Terry Bulman, the park warden.

Plans are underway to build a caravan park in Hawick. Eariler this month the Scottish Borders council granted the Camping and Caravanning Club a 100-year lease on the land at Wilton Lodge Park.
