Mobile home owners travelling to the M5 in the coming days may want to listen to advice from traffic officers at a motorway service station in the area.

Drivers taking their caravans from Yeovil onto the motorway from today until Saturday July 25th will be able to receive guidance from officers on hand at the Taunton Deane Motorway Service Area on the M5.

The experts will offer to guidance to motorists on safety risks when towing a vehicle as well as providing journey planning advice.

"With the holiday season upon us it is timely for us to remind drivers to check and double check before they take to the roads," commented Andrew Page-Dove, regional operations manager for the South West Traffic Officer Service.

He went on to say that the advice applies to consumers towing all sorts of things, from caravans and trailers to boats and horseboxes.

Additionally, traffic officers from the Chelston Outstation will be distributing the latest copy of a new Highways Agency magazine called Hitched.

Around 1,000 of the publications will be handed out during the three-day event, with recipients benefiting from a free atlas and towing guide, which could help them avoid having to make caravan insurance claims.

The magazine is being handed out following 988 towing-related incidents in the south-west last year of a total 9,394 across the country, figures from the agency show.

It adds that last summer saw incidents in the region lead to blocked lanes and carriageways, resulting in hours of disruption.

Last year, the agency launched an educational DVD entitled Fit to Tow as part of its Driver Information Programme.

A similar operation is being conducted at the weekend at Strensham services, the Evesham Journal reports.

Highways Agency representatives will be on hand to advise motorists towing caravans of the best ways to stay safe and raise awareness of the risks.

Jenny Moten, regional operations manager for Highways Agency, told the publication: "Our traffic officers will be on hand to offer advice to motorists with caravans and we've arranged for some of the large messaging signs on the southbound carriageway of the M5 in the West Midlands to remind drivers to take extra care while towing."

Sergeant Dean Caswell from the Central Motorway Police Group urged motorists to take advantage of the initiative.

Opting to receive some guidance could help drivers avoid mishaps on the road, which could in turn lead to costly caravan insurance claims.
