Caravan owners have been urged to fit carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to avoid being poisoned.
CO Awareness, a charity that aims to warn members of the public about the dangers of the gas, has called on caravan owners, those with boats and holiday homes to ensure they have a CO detection device fitted before the holiday season commences.
Speaking on the subject, Lynn Griffiths, the president of the charity, said: "Audible Carbon Monoxide alarms can be purchased comparatively cheaply from most hardware and electrical stores and from the larger supermarket chains."
As such, a CO detector may well be a purchase those with caravan insurance will want to make before setting off on their journey.
Commenting on the detectors themselves, Ms Griffiths said: "They are small and unobtrusive and will easily pack into a suitcase. It is a small investment to make but it could pay a rich dividend."
CO, which is produced as a waste product when fuels are not burnt completely, has no colour or odour, which can make detecting it difficult.
The Health Protection Agency states that symptoms that may result from CO poisoning include dizziness, disorientation, memory loss and problems with an individual's vision.
Exposure to CO can also prove fatal.
