Mobile home owners are being urged not to risk a caravan insurance claim by letting their trailer snake around on the roads.

The Association of British Drivers (ABD) is warning motorists that snaking caravans can swing right round and hit the side of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.

ABD spokesman and caravanner Paul Biggs suggests that drivers should always make sure that the caravan and car are well matched and that the towing vehicle has a professionally fitted specific towbar.

The stability of the pairing will depend on how the caravan is loaded, so heavy goods should be placed in front of and over the caravan axle but not high up or to the rear.

Additionally, it might be wise to fit a stabiliser, but motorists are reminded that the device "is no substitute for a carefully loaded caravan".

Snaking is most likely to occur when drivers build up too much speed or downhill momentum, the organisation suggests.

"If the caravan begins to snake, don't accelerate or brake. Lift off the accelerator to allow engine braking and loosen your grip on the steering wheel until the snaking is brought under control, then gently accelerate back up to speed," Mr Biggs advised.

The advice may be of extra importance following reports that caravanning is becoming increasingly popular this year.
