Holidaymakers have been advised to safeguard their items when loading up their caravan for summer travels, by one expert.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), it is vital that caravan insurance customers ensure that their items are secured properly to avoid damage occurring while they are driving.

Those items damaged in transit may not be covered by insurance policies if caravan owners have not paid for accidental damage cover.

A spokesperson for the ABI said: "Secondly ... make sure that the vehicle is safe to drive.

"And thirdly ... make sure that the items are clearly labelled, by that I mean on the outside and on the inside of the case so if the worst happens there is a good chance you will be reunited with your luggage."

Those heading off on caravan holidays were warned that it is more important now than ever for them to double check their insurance policies before heading off on a break.

The ABI explained that travellers should ensure their policy covers them for the loss of possession outside of the home.

"As a general comment, [in] regards to individual circumstances, yes I would say it is vital," said the spokesperson.

Research conducted by moneysupermarket.com recently found that despite the recession Brits are not cutting back on taking out insurance as they understand the importance of having good cover in place.
