Caravans are a "chic" investment for holidaymakers looking to save money, one expert has advised.

According to the Daily Mail, caravan insurance customers now have more choice than ever when it comes to buying a mobile home with the sector "revitalising" into a more fashionable beast.

Dick Shone is the Sussex-based founder of Boutique Caravans spearheading the caravan craze.

He explained to the newspaper that caravans do not just have to be holiday homes but they can also be a savvy investment for those struggling with property during the credit crunch.

The expert said: "There are people of my generation approaching 50, whose main asset is their house who are thinking about downsizing to park homes for retirement.

"But when I looked at what was on offer the aesthetic was rather old-fashioned."

Shone, who is an art publisher, decided to update caravans for the modern market and now sells mobile homes with fashionable interiors.

Meanwhile, the Independent reports that the term trailer trash is being shaken off by mobile home owners in the US thanks to the chic and modern design of new caravans.
