Chic caravans are rewriting the rule books in the US and helping mobile homes lose their trailer trash image, it is revealed.

According to the Independent, on both sides of the Atlantic caravan insurance customers are wising up to the budgeting benefits of the mobile homes and appreciating their revitalised design.

Joanna Ball of the National Association of Park Home Residents, told the newspaper that she uses her Warwickshire caravan as a permanent place of residence and after 16 years would not go back to bricks and mortar.

She explained: "I love living in a mobile home. It's almost maintenance-free and very warm due to good insulation, which keeps costs down.

"They're cheaper than bricks and mortar properties yet offer as much space as a two-bedroom flat."

It is estimated that around 200,000 people now own caravans or mobile homes on residential sites, with retired Brits looking for a cheaper housing alternative in later life.

With prices for a two-bed mobile home starting at £40,000 the cost savings are evident.

Meanwhile, Dick Shone, the founder of Boutique Caravans, told the Daily Mail earlier this month that caravans are now far more chic than they were 20 years ago.

The Sussex-based art publisher explained that modern caravans come with all the mod cons and have stylish interiors.
