Budgeting Brits determined to take a break that won't cost the Earth should consider a caravan holiday, it has been suggested.

Ben Bentley tells local newspaper the Shropshire Star this is what his family decided to do this year and outlined a series of advantages of the decision to those considering making a similar choice.

The family man says that a caravan holiday is without the bugbears of other breaks, such as the incessant "are we nearly there yet" questions from children, as the staycation he visited was close to home.

Mr Bentley explained: "This year, like many people, our family has had to tighten its collective belt, and the only way to have a break is to have a staycation.

"That is, have a holiday at home, around Shropshire and Mid Wales, possibly with a day on the beach with a bucket and spade, just to tick the holiday must-do box marked: 'Bury dad up to his neck in sand.'"

According to VisitBritain Mr Bentley is not alone: holidays on home soil are up by 13 per cent this year, with Brits being put off foreign holidays by an unfavourable exchange rate in Europe.

The caravan craze was affirmed earlier this month when WildAx Motorhomes told the Telegraph and Argus that bookings for mobile homes during the recession have soared.

The provider of luxury mobile homes plans to increase its business by 50 per cent in the next few years to cope with the popularity of caravanning.
