Caravans and motorhome holidays are becoming more popular but budgeting Brits have been advised not to forget one key component of this kind of break - insurance.

According to one expert, caravan owners need to act responsibly when taking a caravan trip and should run through a mental checklist before heading off on their holidays.

Caravanwise advises Brits to change the awning pegs for bigger ones when fixing their vehicle to their pitch and then buy storm straps to ensure they are steadfast in the event of bad weather.

Motorhome-owners were also urged to check the forecast before setting off and each evening.

"If it looks like the wind will get up check your pegs and fit the storm straps. If the forecast suggests that a storm is rolling in consider taking the awning down while it is still light," travellers were told

"Especially on dry hard ground as you may not have it pegged down adequately. You don't want to be trying to take down the awning in the dark with the wind howling."

Finally, caravan owners should always check the small print of their caravan insurance to ensure that they are covered for damage caused by storms.

Meanwhile, one couple about to find out the ins and outs of a caravan holiday are Mary Collins and her husband Hugh who the Daily Mirror reports won a break a few miles down the road from where they live.

It will be their first holiday in 25 years.
