The growing popularity of caravans and touring vehicles is putting them in short supply, it has been claimed.

Dealers are running low on good used motorhomes, which owners will need caravan insurance for, prompting one expert to hit the road and look into the matter in more detail.

Caravan enthusiast Andrew Jenkinson toured dealerships and says that his investigations have led him to believe that 2009 has been a record year for sales, with Brits favouring the stay-at-home holiday.

He explains: "By May good quality used family caravans especially have flown as the caravan bug takes hold.

"Even the holiday home caravan market which had seen dramatic sales decline last season has reported used units and new selling well."

At Bardsea Leisure in Cumbria there are normally 45 units in stock at any one time but there are currently just nine, while Scottish dealer Knowepark has seen its numbers fall from 80 to 15.

Meanwhile, those who can find a dealership with sufficient stock to satisfy their needs have been advised to opt for a Born Free 20-foot Mini caravan, as unveiled at the Tampa RV Super Show.

Truck Trend says the smaller vehicle has all the benefits of an RV lifestyle but costs less.
