A caravan stockist has seen business increase during the recession as a result of Britons choosing to holiday at home.

Pioneer Caravans, based in Eye, told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph that its turnover has nearly doubled in the past five years, while staff levels have also risen.

"People still want to take holidays, but with the rising cost of going abroad, they are looking for alternatives," Pioneer's marketing manager Chantelle Wilding told the publication.

She added that Brits can invest in a mobile home as an asset and are increasingly seeing such a purchase as worth the money.

"We've found that a number of holidaymakers – across a wide range of ages – are viewing that buying a caravan is a financially viable option and an asset. Our new Swift range, for example, is priced from about £13,000," Ms Wilding stated.

The company has recently added the Swift franchise to its ranges on offer and hopes the brand will account for an extra 100 sales on top of the annual 600 caravans and motorhomes that it sells.

Meanwhile, caravan insurance policyholders may have helped mobile home site firm Haven Holidays see its business increase over the summer.

The firm announced a rise of 38 per cent in sales of its holiday homes during the summer months.
