Bookings at caravan sites in the south-west rose by more than 50 per cent in recent months, a study has shown.

The South West Business Pulse survey conducted by PFA Research asked 123 accommodation providers about their business during 2009 so far, compared with 2008.

Of those questioned, 80 per cent of firms said they had had as good a season or a better season than the previous year.

Among the findings was that value-for-money places to stay saw a boost in business, with caravan and camping sites seeing bookings rise by 56 per cent compared with figures from 2008.

PFA's managing director Robert Rush commented that some earlier surveys have been claiming the staycation is dead, with fewer people planning to take holidays.

The findings showed that 55 per cent of people will still take a holiday, with more than a fifth of those planning to stay at home.

"To me this doesn't say that the staycation is dead, it says that people will still holiday in the UK, but that tourism businesses across the region will need to be more competitive and innovative in order to generate bookings," he stated.

The Daily Mail recently reported that the rise in staycations has led to an increase in the consumption of exotic foods from countries Britons would usually visit during holiday time if it weren't for the recession.
