Thousands of motorists are logging on to social networking site Twitter while at the wheel, says new research.

Analysis of UK 'tweets' over a week by eSure showed the extent that people were breaking the law.

Despite admitting they were breaking the law, almost one in ten drivers surveyed said they use the internet and social networks while on the road.

Almost half of motorists said they find alerts from mobile phones or Blackberry's "very distracting" and the same number "openly admit" to illegally texting or making calls while driving.

A revealing statement came from one person who wrote on the micro blogging site: "I can't believe how bad my spelling was in my last tweet. A testiment (sic) to not tweeting whilst driving!"

Caravan insurance customers planning a trip might remember to switch off their phone before driving after hearing a piece of American research found motorists are 23 times more likely to have an accident when texting or reading emails.

In response to the findings, Gwent police have released a short film, which aims to shock viewers into showing more care at the wheel.
