Despite initial concerns about space and comfort, a travel writer has become a new convert to the merits of caravanning holidays after a tour around France.

Writing in the Guardian last weekend (September 12th), Charlie English said the two-week French holiday offered a great low-cost solution for families who want to travel beyond the confines of a package holiday resort.

Accompanied by his wife and their three small children, Mr English took the Bessacarr E495 - often described as the Cadillac of caravans - for camping in the Loire Valley, kite surfing in Ile de Re and cycling in the Venise Verte.

The mobile accommodation helped the family see parts of France that would otherwise have remained hidden, before returning "browner and fitter and better fed", he said.

Following the trip's success, they are now considering making a more permanent investment and could protect their new purchase with caravan insurance.

"We loved the sense of freedom it had given us," he added.

In related news, trips to camping and caravanning sites were up by almost a quarter (24 per cent) in January to May, compared with the same period last year, according to the UK Tourism Survey.
