Green van man
The Modec van has been launched and has been hailed as the first emission-free van that can compete with diesel equivalents in the performance economy stakes.
Powered using modern battery technology, the Modec produces no carbon dioxide emission and can cover up to 120 miles when fully charged - reaching top speeds of 50 mph.
The battery can be recharged overnight and it is hoped that the van could be part of a large fleet of vehicles that are stored at a depot where recharging can take place.
The vehicle is built in Coventry and with three moving parts to the electric motor, the manufacturer claims it is easy to operate and maintain.
Jamie Borwick, chairman of Modec, said that the van was the first of its kind and that it compares well to others on the market.
"It is 100 per cent clean in terms of local air quality and is virtually silent, spelling the end to noisy night deliveries in urban areas. It is also exempt from road tax and the London congestion charge," he said.
Mr Borwick went on to say that the van had further cost advantages as it is exempt from road tax and also has no operator license fees - and would offer considerable savings to those fleets operating in and around London.
Drivers of the van can rest assured that they are not only helping the environment but also their wallets, leaving them more cash for cheap comprehensive van insurance.
