A combination of low driver visibility due to shorter days and the approach of the deer mating season has prompted the government to launch a new road safety campaign.
Launched by the Highways Agency, the DeerAware initiative aims to educate motorists in avoiding collisions by dipping their headlights, driving more slowly and being ready to stop suddenly on country roads.
Those caravan insurance policyholders planning an autumn break could benefit from one further tip, which suggests anyone who discovers an injured animal should call for help as deer can be unpredictable.
The agency says that an estimated 74,000 incidents involving the animals happen every year and can prove fatal for drivers and deer alike.
Accidents can also be very expensive, notes the agency, costing around £17 million a year in insurance claims.
Animal welfare charity the RSPCA told the BBC that it receives around 3,000 calls a year from people who have come across deer by the roadside.
Colin Booty, a senior wildlife scientist for the society, said: "This is probably the biggest welfare issue affecting our wild deer.
"As well as the deer that are killed, over 10,000 are severely injured every year when hit by vehicles."
