Britons considering investing in a new car to tow their mobile home may be interested in the most recent winner of the Caravan Club's Towcar of the Year 2010 award.

With the scrappage scheme now way past its halfway point, consumers may be thinking in earnest of the best vehicle to pair with their mobile home to save up to £2,000 on a new model.

The recent awards ceremony, held at the Royal Automobile Club in London on September 23rd, might provide just the inspiration caravan insurance policyholders need to make the switch to a newer model.

Among the day's winners was the Mazda6 Estate, which scooped the top prize in the £20,000 to £25,000 class, described by judges as a worthy winner.

An independent panel of six driving judges carried out track tests, which took into account each car's towing ability as well as how it accelerates, brakes and copes with demanding hill starts.

In testing at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, the car was put through its paces, tackling a 17 per cent hill stop and restart "quite easily".

"With a flexible engine, bags of low-down torque and a six-speed gearbox that is not only good to use but well mated to the engine, it's no surprise this is a very worthy class winner," the judges commented.

Additionally, the testers described the vehicle as being a great car for an impressive price.

Launched in January, the model tested was the Mazda6 2.2-litre Diesel Estate TS2 163ps Manual, which is priced at £20,170.

Models in the range are priced from £15,685, with a range of 26 offerings to choose from. Four powertrains are available along with five equipment levels, with consumers able to choose between 11 colours and 16, 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels.

Higher spec models are fitted with the new standard feature Rear Vehicle Monitoring System, which could help motorists towing mobile homes avoid caravan insurance claims.

Mazda UK's Mark Cameron commented: "Whether you are towing a caravan to a motorsport event, a horse box to the county show, or a jet ski trailer to the beach, the Mazda6 Estate has proved over the years of awards from The Caravan Club Towcar of the Year that it consistently rates highly thanks to its flexibility, dynamic handling and great engine."
