Increasing numbers of Britons are choosing caravan holidays as they offer freedom to visit favourite destinations at any time, says a leisure firm.
James Berresford, chief executive of tourism body VisitEngland, urged travel agents to promote domestic breaks as "the product is there to be sold".
Responding to the comments, a spokesperson for Haven Holidays said: "We have seen a significant rise in new customers buying caravan holiday homes this season so they can visit their favourite UK holiday destinations as often as they like."
He agreed that trips close to home can offer the same diversity as foreign resorts: "Britain is a fantastic location for holidays with a huge variety of attractions, many beautiful beaches and breathtaking scenery that rivals anywhere in the world, and we welcome anything to support tourism in the UK."
Caravan insurance policyholders may be among those who flocked to camping sites in the UK this year.
The seasonally adjusted number of British holidays rose two per cent during May to July 2009, when compared with the previous three months.
Self-catering accommodation and specifically camping and caravanning benefited from budget conscious travellers, seeing a rise in popularity of 24 per cent.
