Britons planning a trip around France with their motorhomes are being advised to read up on special rest sites in the country called Aires De Service.

Recommending a book on the subject entitled All the Aires France, information website Lost-in-France.com suggests that the stopping areas may be little known by Brits, but they can be very useful.

Motorhome insurance policyholders investing in the guide will find that France has 1,600 of the Aires De Service, which can provide places to take a break but do not usually offer facilities such as showers or laundry, the website states.

"Aires De Service cost a fraction of that charged by camping sites and do not require advanced booking, many are situated in tourist areas," the website's writers suggest.

Local authorities run the sites, which often have facilities for topping up water or disposing of waste.

In the guide, each area has a number of reference symbols to highlight its features and location, such as whether the site is urban, residential or coastal.

"This handy guide lists 1600 Aires in English even includes the GPS listing for all sites making them even easier to find," the writers conclude.
