A caravan firm based in Wales is set to expand its horizons despite the ongoing credit crunch.

While many companies are floundering amid the economic turmoil, the mobile home market has reportedly been boosted by the number of Britons choosing to take caravan holidays rather than their annual hotel breaks to expensive foreign destinations.

The Fifth Wheel Company is looking to open up new markets in Europe after displaying its range of models at the ten-day Caravan Salon show held in Dusseldorf, Germany.

It was the only British business to display its wares at the event, attracting 160,000 mobile home enthusiasts.

Caravan insurance policyholders may have been among the thousands of visitors to the show attracted to the firm's European-compliant fifth wheel versions of touring caravans.

The company's operations director Adrian Parry-Jones commented that the firm has been operating in the UK for more than seven years and the climate is currently ripe for launching products into mainland Europe.

"As well as the chance to showcase our models to new customers, we were also keen to establish dealer contacts in order to set up networks across Europe," he stated.

"We had a fantastic response from both potential dealers and customers and there is definitely a real appetite for the product."

But the company will continue to appeal to caravan insurance policyholders based in the UK as Mr Parry-Jones added that the firm's base will always be in Denbighshire. He went on to say that he hopes by expanding the business across Europe, the company's future will be safeguarded. It is set to begin the process abroad in the first quarter of next year.

Earlier in 2009, the firm scooped a top award for the best fifth wheel caravan at the Caravan Design Awards for the fifth year in a row.

Announcing the win decided by the Caravan Club at the annual Boat, Caravan & Outdoor Show, judges scored the firm after assessing models in terms of headroom, storage, design, wiring and safety.

Receiving the award, Mr Parry-Jones commented: "We are extremely proud to have received this prestigious award for the past five years - it's a real testament to the outstanding quality, design and build of our tourers."

The company made some changes to the layout of its Celtic Rambler model for 2009, with caravan insurance policyholders now able to choose whether they want to replace the kingsize bed with two single beds.
