Britons considering taking a holiday in Europe this year will find the usual tourist hotspots a little quieter, says a travel expert.

According to industry body the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), caravan insurance customers and other holidaymakers can enjoy relative peace and quiet while touring the continent.

Rising prices are believed to be behind the tourist exodus, as a recent survey from Travel Trade Gazette found that the price of holidays rose by £26 to £564 this summer.

Kate Kenward, executive director at AITO, said: "Europe will always be popular for Brits and if the numbers are less, touring major cities and attractions which have been known to be busy in the past will be a joy."

She added that travel companies were now being "savvier about currency fluctuations, especially in Europe, and will also ensure they have adequate margins to cover these".

"There were quite a few people waiting to make last minute travel arrangements last summer – because they didn't know what the economy was going to do and perhaps they thought there would be many last minute deals," noted Ms Kenward.
