Caravan insurance customers may be among those flocking to the Dorset coast to enjoy a break in the town named as Britain's 'staycation' capital.

Respondents to the Virgin Money Travel Insurance poll rated a list of destinations on factors including weather, price and the quality of local attractions.

Bournemouth came out as the highest-scoring location, beating off stiff competition from rivals Brighton, Scarborough and Portsmouth.

Commenting on the results, Peter Hampton, director of the British Resorts and Destinations Association, said he was not surprised at the public's affection for the town.

"There's a lot there; there's shows, there's theatres, there's entertainment, there's a fantastic seven miles of beach. So it's a big resort which puts an awful lot of effort in and has a lot to offer," he explained.

Mr Hampton added that much of Bournemouth's appeal stems from the variety it offers: "There's stuff for granny to do and there's also stuff for the toddlers and stuff for the teenagers, because that's what the UK holiday market's about - it's about providing what the customer wants."

He noted that this also applies to the UK in general, which provides "literally something for everyone".
