New figures published by UK tourism chiefs reveal the trend for holidaying at home is likely to continue into next year.

According to domestic travel body VisitEngland trips taken within the country were up by 24 per cent in July compared to the previous year.

Breaks taken in the whole of the UK were up by 20 per cent and visitor spend rose by 13 per cent in the same period.

Despite the Met Officer's predictions for gloomy weather and the wettest July since 1914, many Britons resisted travelling abroad, with outbound holidays down by 17 per cent.

Caravan insurance customers may be among those already booking their next year's getaway, with confirmations already looking good for 2010 and 2011, claims the tourism agency.

Commenting on the results of the study, James Berresford, VisitEngland's chief executive, said they reveal UK residents are rediscovering the "dynamic and diverse" options available without travelling abroad.

"We intend to work with the whole of the English tourism industry to ensure this trend is sustainable through 2010 and beyond," he added.

Those holidaymakers planning a European break may prefer to take their caravan rather than pay for flights, as an increase in Air Passenger Duty is set to raise fares.
