Self-catering holidays in the north-east of England are proving more popular than ever, according to new figures.

The North East Tourism Advisory Board (NETA) reports occupancy levels to be at an "all-time high", with the value of online bookings more than doubling since last year.

Geoff Hodgson, chairman of NETA, said the region has a "wealth of history and heritage" to offer visitors.

Caravan insurance customers making a visit to the area could take a trip to Durham Castle and cathedral or Hadrian's Wall.

Mr Hodgson noted a "huge amount of investment, both from the private and public sector", has created a range of new attractions, including the Great North Museum in Newcastle and Saltholme in the Tees Valley.

The news follows a report from the National Trust revealing paying visitor numbers to its north-east properties were up by more than 100,000 on 2008.

Free-to-access sites owned by the trust, such as the Durham and Northumberland coast and Allen Banks, have also seen a significant rise in visitor popularity.

The north-east's popularity was not mirrored elsewhere in the country, with visitor numbers for National Trust attractions falling by one per cent overall.
