The growing penchant for Britons to take their holidays in the UK has resulted in a bumper year for caravan parks, it has been claimed.

The Daily Mail reports that the decision by many Britons to stay in the UK instead of holidaying abroad in order to save money during the recession has resulted in a significant rise in the sales of caravans and bookings at caravan parks.

According to the newspaper, Haven Holidays, one of the biggest operators, has enjoyed a record 23.8 per cent increase in sales of static caravans on its permanent sites over the course of 2009.

Sites in Wales and Cornwall were the most popular, the newspaper reports, with sales at the company increasing by 50 per cent in those two regions.

More people are likely to need cheap caravan insurance as they look to make their holiday cash go further during the global economic downturn, especially as the pound has fallen considerably against the dollar and euro over the past year.

So-called 'staycations' were boosted not only by the economic situation this year, but also by forecasts of a long hot summer in the UK.
