A keen interest in caravans has helped one Hartlepool man turn a hobby into a business.

Ronnie McKeith, aged 53, told the Peterlee Mail that after numerous jobs in different sectors, he has moved into the field of caravanning as the Caravan Medic.

A lifelong caravan owner, Mr McKeith took a redundancy package from his former employer - a car transporter firm - a learned a number of extra skills that would enable him to start up the business.

"I have always owned a caravan and always repaired my own," commented the mobile home enthusiast, who is married to Diane, 46, and has two children.

For the past two months, Mr McKeith has been taking his business around the local area and as far as Guisborough, Thirsk and Yorkshire to fix caravan insurance policyholders' models.

While he admitted the season has tailed off a bit as consumers save for Christmas, he expects business to be thriving again come February or March.

Mr McKeith added that he has high hopes for the future and plans to buy and sell mobile homes and fix up caravans for sale.

A similar service is offered in Cambridgeshire by a firm called The Caravan Medic, part of the Car Medic group.
