A new caravan shop has been opened in County Durham, fulfilling the 'lifelong ambition' held by a local businesswoman to own her own business.
Paula Gilbey decided to open Multi-Touring after being made redundant from her previous job and she is aiming to tap into the £6 billion UK caravan and camping market by selling caravan accessories and parts, reports the Northern Echo.
Now could be good time to enter the sector as the recession has prompted many Britons to choose a holiday in the UK instead of spending more money on travelling overseas, and staying at home can often mean a caravan trip.
In addition, celebrities such as Jamie Oliver and Wayne Hemingway have recently brought renewed focus onto the various benefits of a caravanning holiday.
Ms Gilbey told the paper: "It's a good time to be going into business. It's an industry I love and a customer base I know well."
The businesswoman previously worked for Discover and so has a substantial knowledge of the wider leisure sector.
Ms Gilbey started her business with the help of funding from Be Enterprising, a Local Enterprise Growth Initiative available in County Durham.
Nearly 19 million Britons chose to holiday in the UK over the summer months, according to figures from VisitEngland.
