In news that could interest caravan insurance customers, there was a 13 per cent year-on-year increase in south-east occupancy during the third quarter of this year, says the Camping and Caravanning Club.
According to the organisation, nearly 80 per cent of caravan attractions in the region performed better during the third quarter of this year than during the same period in 2008, reports TravelDaily.co.uk.
In addition, third-quarter growth was experienced by almost half of businesses based in the south-east, according to figures from Tourism South East, while nearly 80 per cent of these businesses said an increase in domestic visitors had has a significant impact.
One reason for the substantial increase in numbers is that more people have responded to the recession by opting to holiday at home this year rather than travel abroad.
Parves Khan, head of research at Tourism South East, said: "It looks like the 'staycation' effect is set to continue. Park Holidays UK, for example, has reported that advance bookings for 2010 at its 25 centres are 66 per cent ahead of last year's figures."
In other news, 59-year-old Elaine Darlington of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, is planning to journey around the UK in a caravan having recently retired, reports the Sentinel.
