Teenager dies in van "prank"
A teenager was killed in an apparent prank after falling from the bumper of a moving van, the Scotsman has reported.
The accident occurred in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The 19-year-old male, who will not be identified until his family has been informed, died in hospital from the head injuries he sustained in the fall, later the same afternoon.
It is understood that he had been fooling around in the street when he decided to jump on to the vehicle's rear bumper.
The driver did not notice what was happening and drove off with the teenager still hanging on.
He was carried along for about 300 metres before falling from the back of the van, suffering injuries to his skull which proved fatal.
He was taken by ambulance to hospital in East Kilbride, before being transferred to the Southern General Hospital, where he died.
The coroner's report, which will establish whether alcohol or illegal drugs had impaired the dead man's judgement, has not yet been published.
The van driver was not injured, but police said he was "badly shaken".
The incident highlights the importance of comprehensive van insurance for all drivers.
Their large size makes them an appealing target for adventurous youths and means they have a larger blind spot, of which the driver must be aware.
