Two of the main appeals of caravan holidays are the levels of "freedom and flexibility" on offer by not always being attached to a specific site, says an expert organisation.
According to the Camping and Caravanning Club, holidaymakers with caravan insurance often choose an anchor point and then go off to visit any local sites of interest there may be, while caravanning and camping often end up being cheaper than staying in a hotel.
Caravanning has proven popular through the course of 2009, with the organisation's membership numbers increasing be nearly 25 per cent since last year.
Jon Dale, spokesman for the Camping and Caravanning Club, said: "People have not had as much disposable income as what they did have, due to the recession, so people are opting to holidaying in this country rather than going abroad."
Camping and caravanning look set to continue to grow in popularity in 2010 as advanced bookings for next year have risen by nearly 50 per cent on last year's figures, Mr Dale added.
With seasonal adjustments, there was a three per cent decrease in the number of Britons heading overseas between August and October of this year, according to the Office for National Statistics.
